“O God, We Do Not Understand”

Written by Lowry Manders on the occasion of the Tsunami Disaster,

for a Children’s Prayer Service, January, 2005

O God, we do not understand

When torrents rage and sweep the land.

When lives and dreams are washed away,

But we believe you hear us pray.

We pray for children who have gone,

Or struggle just to carry on,

For those who hurt with pain or grief,

Or wait alone in disbelief.

Send them your peace, your comfort now.

Send us the will to help somehow,

‘Till all your children everywhere

Feel love and safety in your care.

And when we lose and when we grieve,

And when we struggle to believe,

It’s then you hold us in your hands,

You carry us o’er wave-swept lands.
